Description

The shoe horn you'll actually leave by the door instead of putting away in a cupboard.

A shoe horn only helps if it's within reach when you're heading out. Most end up in a drawer, and the moment that happens you're back to bending down at the door.

This one is 52cm of polished stainless steel with a loop at the top, so it hangs where you'll use it. At 330g it has real weight in the hand. It doesn't flex or twist while your heel goes down, and the scoop stays where you put it.

One continuous piece, 52 x 4.5cm. No joins, no moving parts. Wipes clean with a cloth.

If you've been given instructions about bending after surgery, check with your physio first.

No flex. No fuss. No cupboard.

Full specifications

  • Material: Polished stainless steel
  • Length: 52cm overall
  • Scoop: 4.5cm across at its widest point
  • Weight: 330g
  • Construction: One continuous piece, no joins or moving parts
  • Hanging loop: Closed loop formed into the top of the handle
  • Care: Wipe clean with a cloth

Who is This For?

This may suit you if:

  • Bending down to put your shoes on is uncomfortable or slow
  • Reaching your feet from a chair takes more effort than it used to
  • You have found a plastic shoe horn flexes when you press on it
  • You would rather keep it out by the door than in a drawer
  • You are setting up a home so that the simple daily jobs stay simple

What it is good for:

  • Putting shoes on from a hall chair or bench rather than down on the floor
  • Slipping into shoes from an armchair or the edge of the bed
  • Firmer shoes, boots and lace-ups that crush at the heel
  • Living permanently on a hook by the front door
  • A gift, where the plastic one would not feel like one

Important Safety Information

This is a dressing aid, not a medical device, and nothing on this page is professional health advice or a substitute for a consultation. If you have been given specific instructions about how far you may bend, for example after hip surgery, check with your physiotherapist, occupational therapist or surgeon before you rely on this or any other aid. At 52cm it shortens the reach considerably, but depending on your height and your chair it may not remove the need to lean forward altogether.

Use it seated wherever you can. Standing on one leg to put a shoe on can put your balance at risk, and a shoe horn does not change that. Sit down, take your time, and keep your other foot on the floor.

This is a rigid metal object with some weight to it. Do not lean on it, put your weight through it, use it as a walking stick, or use it to reach or hook objects. Keep it clear of walkways and off the floor when you are not using it, and hang it where it cannot fall.

The Steel Shoe Horn - The One You Leave by the Door

Why we like this

We already sell a plastic shoe horn and it does the job well. This one exists for a different reason: it's the one you don't put away.

Polished steel, 330g, one continuous piece with a loop at the top. It's the difference between a tool you store and something that lives by the front door and looks like it belongs there. For a thing you use every single day, that turns out to matter more than the specification does.

The physio behind the store

I built this store because I was already recommending this equipment in sessions every day. As a mobile physio working in people's homes, I know what actually fits a real living room, a real bedroom, a real kitchen and what older adults will actually use.

Everything here has been in my kit bag, used with real clients, and chosen because it works in the home environment, not just in a clinic.

Physio pro tip

The technique is the same whichever shoe horn you use:

  • Sit down first — standing on one leg to put a shoe on is where balance gets tested, and no shoe horn changes that
  • Position the scoop before your foot moves — flat against the back of the shoe, then slide your heel down it
  • Let the weight do the work — this one is rigid enough that you don't need to grip hard or push. Guide it, and your heel follows

Hang it where the shoes live. The best piece of equipment is the one you actually use.

What makes us different

Everything on this store is something we actually use. It's in our kit bag — we bring it into real sessions with real clients, week after week. If it's here, it's because we've tried it, trusted it, and watched it make a genuine difference.

We're not trying to sell you everything. The range is curated for older adults building strength and independence at home, and simplicity is the whole point. You don't need a home gym. You don't need to be an expert.

As a mobile physio practice, we can only reach so many people in person. This store is how we share what works with everyone else.

Why it matters

Movement keeps you going

57%
of Australians aged 65+ didn't meet physical activity guidelines
AIHW analysis of ABS NHS, 2022
65+
As we get older, staying active keeps you independent and able to do everyday activities
NSW Health, Physical activity guidelines for older adults
30min
of moderate to vigorous activity on most days is what Australian guidelines recommend for 65+
Australian movement guidelines for older adults, 2026

The evidence is clear: it is never too late to start. A few minutes of movement most days adds up to something real over time. You don't need a gym, a trainer, or a complicated programme. You need simple equipment that works at home and a reason to pick it up.

The evidence

Three things regular movement may help maintain

  • Muscle Strength
We naturally lose muscle mass as we age. Resistance exercise is one of the most effective tools for slowing that process — at any age.
  • Balance & Stability
Balance responds well to regular practice. Simple exercises done consistently can make a meaningful difference to how steady you feel day to day.
  • Independence at Home
People over 65 benefit more from adequate fitness than any other age group — to maintain independence, recover from illness, and reduce disease risk.
